Introduction
Not all the known Kings of England are listed before the Normans, only those of importance to understanding the English Monarchy, and their relationship with France. After the Norman Conquest the list is complete. Until Edward III each entry on this page links to the Wikipedia page on that Monarch. From Edward I through James I the entries are taken from the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, with a paragraph at the top detailing the importance of the Monarch to this packet. After James I the entries return to Wikipedia links.
For those kings who exist as both historical monarchs and characters in Shakespeare’s work, the links on this page lead to the historical account. The link on the characters page leads to a page detailing Shakespeare’s character.
